COURSE 3:
FOCUSING

HAVE YOU WATCHED THE FREE PRESENTATION YET?

YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!

FOCUSING is a psychotherapeutic process developed by Eugene Gendlin that emphasizes connecting with the feelings inside the body. It can be applied in any therapeutic setting, including peer-to-peer and self-help sessions. This therapeutic method involves maintaining a specific type of open, non-judgmental attention to an "internal knowingness" that one has not yet articulated in words.

Focusing can help individuals clarify their feelings and desires, gain new insights into their situations, and promote change or healing. Three key qualities set Focusing apart from other methods of inner awareness:

(1) the "felt sense”,

(2) a quality of engaged, accepting attention, and

(3) a research-based technique that facilitates change.

Gendlin found that, across the board, successful mental health patients intuitively focus on how their bodies feel inside. They tend to direct their attention to a vague, very subtle internal awareness, described as a "felt sense" in the body. When we focus on that felt sense, which contains information we may not be aware of (provided by our higher self or inner wisdom), we can ask questions about the feeling within and find answers that resolve the problems we face. Doing so will result in a "felt shift”, a sense of inner movement that enables the person experiencing it to move beyond being "stuck". This forward movement facilitates fresh insights, often indicating what to do next to solve issues.

The Holistic Psychology self-help techniques you will learn can help you:

  • transform

  • become who you want to be, and

  • empower you to guide the people in your immediate circle to do the same
